Eye Emergencies Are No Joke: If You Are Experiencing One,

Visit Us (or a Hospital) ASAP

The eye is a delicate and precious organ. As the only mechanism we have for sight, it is imperative that we do all we can to protect and preserve them. An eye emergency is when your eyesight is at risk, and these emergencies require prompt medical treatment.

When vision loss occurs it generally cannot be restored. Unlike mending a broken bone or healing an open wound, your eyesight is unfortunately not nearly as resilient. This is why we are so adamant about the importance of preventative eye care.

In the case of an eye emergency, such as getting a chemical in your eye, prompt treatment can be the difference between vision loss and retention.

We are fully equipped to handle just about any eye care emergency. Our practice uses the latest in optometric equipment, enabling us to quickly diagnose and treat your emergency. In most cases, visiting us is faster than visiting a hospital.

Please note that the information on this page is not a replacement for visiting a doctor. Treat this information as a guide.

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, please visit us or an emergency room as soon as possible:

  • Chemical contact with eye or face
  • Severe eye, head, or face injury
  • Sudden loss of all or part of your vision
  • Bulging eye
  • Painful eye
  • Onset of flashing lights, floaters, or a noticeable increase in the amount of flashes and floaters
  • Appearance of a “veil”, or curtain across the field of vision
  • Sudden changes in pupil size
  • Eyes that are sensitive to light
  • Foreign body in the eye
  • Double vision
  • Postoperative patients with pain in or around the eye, infectious discharge, increased redness, or decreased vision (in either eye)

Your eye is particularly sensitive to chemicals, including indirect contact via vapors. If you have a chemical contaminant in your eye, be it a cleaning chemical, an industrial solvent, or any other type of caustic chemical, stop reading this and immediately flush your eye.

If possible, use clean contact lens solution to rinse your eye. If unavailable, use cool, clean tap water.

Tilt your head back and gently flush the eye with the solution/water. This should be done for at least 15 minutes, even if you feel relief shortly after beginning. This is due to the nature of how your eye is lubricated by your eyelid and surrounding tissues; it is necessary to ensure that the chemical has been thoroughly rinsed and removed.

Once you’ve rinsed your eye, visit us or an emergency room for assessment.

If you get a foreign object into your eye, such as sand or metal shavings, do not press or otherwise mechanically stimulate your eye. Doing so may cause corneal scratches, which can be quite painful as well as a risk potential for infection.

If you have an eye patch, put it on. If not, a pair of eyeglasses/sunglasses will offer some protection until you are able to get treatment.

Our Reviews

  • My first time at the optometrist, and I couldn't recommend Lakeside Vision any higher. Everyone from the moment I walked in until the time I left made me feel at ease. I waited basically no time despite a very busy office. Everyone explained everything to me very well. I will mostly definitely return and recommend this location to my friends and family.

  • My husband had his first appointment yesterday, and was very pleased with the services provided. The staff were knowledgeable and very friendly! Our son had been the first to visit the office last year. Thanks for another great experience! It's obvious that this office takes the time to educate their staff about quality care!

  • I was taken care of wonderfully. I was made to understand everything that was done and what the reason was needed. My vision problems were summed up for me and the glasses were ordered for me to correct the problems with my vision. I am very happy that we are back with Lakeside Vision.
